Tuesday, January 3rd, 2012

The more common and easily identifiable symptoms of depression are:

deep feeling of sadness,
emptiness, and
hopelessness.

The other way to determin if you have depression is by how long these feelings last. If they hang on for longer that
a couple of weeks, then chances are you don’t have “the blues” you have been afflicted with depression and what you
really need to do is go and discuss your symptoms with your doctor.

When we think about depression we have the habit of associating depression with the emotional symptoms of how we feel,
however, along with the emotional symptoms we do have physical symptoms as well, which can be equally debilitaiting.
Here are checklists of symptoms of clinical depression, both on the emotional and physical side:

1. Emotional

- feelings of sadness throughout the day and consistently every day

- lack of interest or no interest at all in your favorite activities

- feelings of hopelessness and/or feeling empty inside

- feeling stressed, nervousness, or entirely overwhelmed

- having a hard time concentrating and/or making decisions

- feeling worthless

- feelings of excessive guilt

- feeling restless and irritable

- thoughts of suicide or death

2. Physical

- no energy and feeling fatigue

- either not enough sleep or sleeping all the time

- changes in appetite and/or weight

- suffering from aches and pains

- suffering from headaches

- experiencing back pain

- problems with your digestive systems

This checklists of symptoms of clinical depression is meant for you to take notice and if you have these symptoms and go speak with
your family doctor. Once your doctor is aware of these symptoms he or she can help you understand
what depression is and from there talk
to you about the best treatments of
clinical depression for you.

Depression – How Organic Nicotine Can Help

Monday, January 2nd, 2012

Nicotine is showing great promise as a medical compound for treating patients with depression, due to its ability to affect our feelings of well being and mood.

Medical research has established that smoking by people with depression can be in many instances a form of self medication, as Nicotine has been shown to relieve, at least temporarily the symptoms that cause depression.

The reason for this is the same areas of the brain that are stimulated by nicotine appear to influence our moods.

Nicotine stimulates the release of specific neurotransmitters which include:

Serotonin, Dopamine and Norepinephrine.

These neuro-transmitters carry messages between the nerves cells and depression has been linked to chemical imbalances in these neurotransmitters.

Medical research being carried out on the nicotine molecule is looking at the possibility of restoring this balance by taking nicotine.

By taking nicotine patients may lessen the symptoms of depression by increasing levels of the various brain chemicals that alter our moods by restoring balance.

Medical research on nicotine is on going, into it’s possible health benefits in a wide number of areas of which depression is only one.

While the relationship between nicotine and depression is not yet fully understood, the initial findings point to nicotine in its pure form (outside of cigarette smoking) could provide help to patients suffering with depression.

Nicotine in its pure form is safe and non toxic.

It is simply its association with cigarettes that gives it a bad reputation.

There is in fact no evidence whatsoever that smoking cause’s cancer or death.

The fact is, nicotine is just one of 4,000 chemicals consumed in cigarette smoking and it is some of these that are the killers not Nicotine.

Nicotine is actually a naturally occurring compound in nature and is part of the food chain with trace elements found in many vegetables for example, such as potatoes and tomatoes and even some teas.

Nicotine suffers from a bad reputation due to its association with tobacco but medical research is showing it could help with a number of illnesses apart from depression including:

Schizophrenia, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and obesity to name a few.

Research on nicotine and its exact affect on depression is in its early stages, however the signs are at present that it can aid the symptoms, which will give hope to millions around the world who suffer from depression and the misery it can cause.

Depression – Tough Love For The Sufferer

Tuesday, December 27th, 2011

People who suffer from depression are hard to get angry with. They’re so low and so fragile that you’re afraid that saying anything negative to them is going to send them right over the edge. Well, there is a way to treat a person who is depressed without necessarily being cruel. Tough love, to a certain degree, is the order of the day. Below are just a few tips on how to deal with somebody who is depressed. It is not advised to try these things with somebody who is severely depressed to the point where they can no longer function.

The first thing you have to do is make sure the person gets out of bed. This is one of the major signs of somebody who is depressed. They sleep very late in the morning and take frequent naps during the day. If you’re living with somebody who is depressed, lay down some ground rules for wake up time. Agree on a time that is reasonable. If the person doesn’t have a job to go to, make this a time where the whole morning isn’t shot by the time they do get out of bed. Use your judgment on this.

Another thing you have to do is make sure that the person does what they need to do during the day. If they do have a job, even a part time job, make sure they get to that job each day. How well they perform on the job is another issue, but make it absolutely clear that no matter how bad they feel, they can’t come home until their work day is over.

Another thing you have to do is make sure the person does their chores around the house. If you expect the person to make his own bed, clean certain rooms, take out the garbage, or whatever, make sure they do it. It doesn’t matter how small the chore is. People who are depressed will have trouble even taking out the garbage. Do not allow them to shirk their responsibilities, no matter how much they may want to.

Another thing you have to do is make sure they eat regularly. Many times, people who are depressed stop eating regular meals or eat sporadically. Make sure you keep them on a regular eating schedule, even if you have to cook for them. Let them know under no uncertain terms that there is a regular dinner time each night and they are expected to be at the dinner table at that time.

You also want to make sure they get plenty of exercise. The last thing you want to allow them to do is sit around watching TV, or worse, just sitting around and staring into space. You can allow for some recreational time, but you can’t allow just sitting around to be a major part of the day. In general, you want to make sure they lead as normal a life as possible.

Part of treating depression is not letting the depressed person sink deeper into one. By keeping them busy and leading as normal a life as possible, this can be easier to accomplish.
